So I wanted to share with you a fun thing that we did. I got the idea from the "Deceptively Delicious" cookbook by Jessica Steinfeld. For those of you who have not seen it the basic idea is this - steam and puree loads of vegetables that you probably never get your kids to eat and then add them to things that you know that your kids will eat without changing the actual product that much. I spent a few hours over Christmas break steaming, pureeing, ziploc bagging up the stuff to put in the freezer. It was kind of fun. Well we have tried some of her recipes with hit or miss success. That which we have enjoyed has been adding sweet potato puree to our french toast mixture. They were similar to a pumpkin type french toast. My kids REALLY liked that. Last night - In honor or National Pancake Week (see below for details) - we made these little ditties. Pink princess pancakes! They were SO pink. I do not think that you could even get it that pink with food coloring. A great idea for breakfast Valentine's Day morning. The hidden ingredient - pureed beets! You just add the puree to your regular pancake mix and add some vanilla and shredded apple. Super fun and the kids thought that it was so cool. Hudson however was very disturbed by the color change to his beloved brown pancakes (that is the only color that we can get him to eat) and just wanted a piece of bread with syrup on it. (see Brown whole wheat bread and brown syrup - I am not joking) Instead he opted for a peanut butter, no jelly, sandwich. See - back to the BROWN thing again.
I have to admit I had no idea that it was National Pancake Week I just happened upon it when I was looking up recipes to make for dinner. See below for an explanation that your kids would probably find amusing if they are anything like mine who like to gather random facts. (I think that they learned this from their father.)
"Admit it. You're asking yourself why pancakes deserve a week-long celebration. Well, you've probably heard about giving up your favorite indulgences for Lent--the period of fasting and abstinence in the weeks leading up to Easter. But what does that have to do with pancakes? Read on. Feast Today, Fast Tomorrow Pancake Week is grounded in ancient tradition. During the Middle Ages, it was common practice to prepare for the austerity of Lent by purging the pantry of luxurious foods such as eggs, butter and milk. These ingredients often became big batches of pancakes. To this day, many communities around the world feast on pancakes all the way through Shrove Tuesday--also known as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras--before the season of moderation begins on Ash Wednesday. In fact, another name for Fat Tuesday is Pancake Day."
So enjoy some yummy pancakes this week in honor of the holiday. Try these or my whole wheat blender pancakes or Jennie's Fly off the plate pancakes, or a new creation of your own. Let me know if you need the recipes if I haven't sent them to you already. Tell me what scrumptious thing that you added to this staple dish that every mom should feel no guilt about serving for dinner every once in a while?

Finally!
Do you know why this little girl is SO excited? She has finally lost her other front tooth. We have been waiting, hoping , and praying that it would finally come out. It has been so loose and nasty for way too long! She finally got it out on accident. She kneed herself in the mouth when she was getting her pajamas on last night. How do you do that? (She actually showed me a reenactment)
Anyway...I ask you.....does this look like a pathetic face to you? The reason I ask is because she was upset after school yesterday because someone had called her a really bad name. You know what it was : PATHETIC!!!!! I am quite sure that the other 1st grader had no idea what he was saying. Emmelyne sure didn't but she could tell that that it was mean by the way her said it. She told me," He had to give me a real big apology" So here is to my very NOT pathetic daughter... here are 5 reasons you are oh-so-not pathetic.
1. You crack us up at the funny questions that you ask.
2. You have a genuine concern and love for those around you. Your heart is so kind.
3. You are always up for an adventure.
4. You are meticulous about keeping the rules and keeping a secret. Pinky promises are a very serious thing to her.
5. You make the best crazy faces in our house.
Do you have a reason that Emmelyne is not pathetic?
I am taking a cue from my dear friend Rachelle and listing some of my favorite things.
1. The first are my new Nike AirZoom Vomero 2 running shoes. They are called running shoes because that is what you can do in them. I however am mostly walking with spurts of jogging - 1 minute intervals right now . I am working up to being able to run a 5K in the spring. That may not seem a lofty goal for some BUT for me. It is huge and I am taking it slow and in little chunks. I figure that if I train out here in the VERY rolling hills of Penryn the flat American River Bike Trail will be a breeze. After I accomplish that goal who knows I may actually find that I enjoy running and miss it on the days that I can't go. I am not there yet however I do enjoy how I feel after. These shoes are amazing. I went to Fleet Feet in Roseville and was fitted for this shoe. What a difference it makes. I feel like a little kids on the first day of school when you have new shoes on and you are sure that you can run faster because of it.
2. Love the Google pedometer maps. I can track my course before hand and see elevation changes, etc. It has been so helpful and it is free. I guess that one of those cool watches would do the same thing too but right now my free option is working great. I do not want to know that I am only averaging 15 miles and hour right now (that is what the watch would tell me too) but to my defense there are SERIOUS hills out here. * I was wrong with my mileage lingo - the correct term would be a 15 minute mile - Whoa - NOT 15 MILES PER HOUR! *
3. Lastly - Cinnamon Life cereal with frozen raspberries on top. SUPER YUMMY! and I am not a cereal girl but I am getting better at at least having breakfast in the morning.
What are some of your favorite things that you have discovered lately?

The NFL has nothing on these guys!
Yesterday we celebrated Brigham's 9th birthday with his friends. He was patient enough to wait for the holidays to pass to have his party. Plus he really wanted to do mud football so we had to wait until the weather was just right. It could not have been better. After 1 week of rain here in California and then a half an hour of Charles spinning doughnuts with the quad in the dirt and top it off with some extra sprinkler action.....it was game time. The boys had a blast and got very serious about their game. Brigham was kind enough to let Hudson try on the flag football belts and let him "hang" with the big boys. Brooklyn was content to side on the sidelines and cheer the boys on. (That only lasted 5 minutes and then she wanted to go inside) It was so much fun.
